Privacy Policy

Last Updated: November 9, 2025

1. Introduction

Welcome to Vocalario. We are committed to protecting your privacy and being transparent about our data practices. This Privacy Policy explains how Vocalario ("we," "us," or "our") handles information when you use our Chrome extension.

TL;DR: We don't collect, store, or share your personal data. Everything stays on your device.

2. Information We Do NOT Collect

Vocalario is designed with privacy at its core. We do not collect:

  • Personal identification information (name, email, phone number, etc.)
  • Usage data or analytics
  • Browsing history or websites you visit
  • Vocabulary words or phrases you look up
  • Your AI provider API keys
  • Any content from webpages you analyze
  • Device information or IP addresses
  • Cookies or tracking data

3. Local Data Storage

All data generated by Vocalario is stored locally in your browser using Chrome's local storage API. This includes:

  • Your vocabulary lists and learning progress
  • Extension settings and preferences
  • AI provider configuration (stored encrypted in your browser)

This data never leaves your device and is not synchronized to any server. You can delete all data at any time by removing the extension or clearing your browser's local storage.

4. Third-Party Services

Vocalario integrates with third-party AI providers when you provide your own API keys. These providers may include:

  • OpenAI (ChatGPT)
  • Anthropic (Claude)
  • Google (Gemini)

When you use these services through Vocalario:

  • Your requests are sent directly from your browser to the AI provider
  • We do not intercept, store, or process these requests
  • Each provider has their own privacy policy and data handling practices
  • You are responsible for reviewing and accepting their terms of service

Important: The text you send to AI providers (vocabulary words, sentences, context) is subject to their privacy policies, not ours. Please review:

  • OpenAI Privacy Policy
  • Anthropic Privacy Policy
  • Google Privacy Policy

5. Permissions

Vocalario requests the following Chrome extension permissions:

  • activeTab: To access the content of the webpage you're currently viewing when you activate the extension
  • storage: To save your vocabulary data and settings locally in your browser
  • contextMenus (optional): To add right-click menu options for vocabulary lookup

These permissions are used solely for the extension's functionality and not for data collection.

6. Data Security

Since all data is stored locally on your device:

  • Your data is as secure as your device and browser
  • We recommend using strong device passwords and keeping your browser updated
  • API keys are stored using Chrome's secure storage mechanisms
  • No data transmission to our servers means no risk of server breaches

7. Children's Privacy

Vocalario does not knowingly collect any information from anyone, including children under 13. Since we don't collect data at all, the extension is safe for users of all ages. However, parents should be aware that children will need their own AI provider API keys to use the extension.

8. Your Rights and Choices

You have complete control over your data:

  • Access: All your data is accessible through the extension interface
  • Export: You can export your vocabulary data at any time
  • Delete: Remove the extension to delete all local data, or use the extension's clear data feature
  • Opt-out: Since we don't collect data, there's nothing to opt out of

9. International Users

Vocalario can be used anywhere in the world. Since all data stays on your device, there are no cross-border data transfers. However, if you use third-party AI providers, your data may be processed in their servers located in different countries.

10. Changes to This Privacy Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. If we make significant changes, we will:

  • Update the "Last Updated" date at the top of this policy
  • Notify users through the extension (if applicable)
  • Provide a summary of changes in the extension's release notes

Your continued use of Vocalario after changes constitutes acceptance of the updated policy.

11. Open Source

Vocalario is open source. You can review our code to verify our privacy claims:

  • GitHub Repository: github.com/vocalario
  • Review how data is stored and handled
  • Verify that no data is sent to external servers
  • Contribute to improving privacy and security

While we don't collect personal data, we strive to align with privacy regulations including:

  • Other applicable data protection laws

Our local-first, no-collection approach means we exceed the requirements of most privacy regulations.
